Spring Planting

Yes, it might be cold out there, but it really is time to start planting for the spring garden. As with any other time, planning and preparation are important before the fist seed goes into the ground. Planning will let your hard work pay off with a bountiful harvest.

If you have a first time garden, the planning portion of gardening is: how much sun will your garden spot get? The site needs to be clear of shade trees or the house for an eight-hour period, average. Also take into consideration that the sun will shift further north in the summer, so that will affect. Till your site to a depth of 8-10 inches, adding organic material. Finished compost helps loosen clay soils, and helps sandy soils retain moisture better, as well as adding nutrients for the growing plants.

Planning the space you’re going to plant helps you to know what you can plant. Some varieties take a lot of room, but can go ‘vertical’ with support. Cucumbers, squash, even watermelons can all grow on a trellis, if you support the fruit. Pole beans also need the support of a trellis, cattle panel, or such that bush beans don’t require. Corn needs more room to grow, and does best in a block, rather than a row, for pollination. Graph paper lets you scale your garden to take the best advantage of your garden space. The Fannin County Gardening Guide will help you answer when to plant and when the best time to buy is.

What are you going to plant? A small salad garden doesn’t take a lot of space. Lettuce, radishes, carrots, and a cherry tomato will provide a tasty fresh salad with minimal space. If you have a larger space, green beans, potatoes, squash, peppers as well as other varieties can be added for the home gardener’s tastes.

Planning and preparation time will pay off in less work, making your gardening experience more enjoyable this year.
